Louisiana construction numbers remain stagnant

McGraw-Hill Construction recently reported that Louisiana's year-to-date contracts for future construction were relatively unchanged through July compared to 2003.

Total construction figures came in at about $3.62 billion compared to $3.61 billion the previous year.

While both residential and nonresidential numbers improved by 11 percent and 9 percent, respectively, a sharp 28 percent decline in year-to-date nonbuilding construction offset the gains.

Nonresidential numbers came in at $1.17 billion compared to $1.07 billion in 2003; residential numbers were $1.82 billion compared to $1.65 billion in 2003; and nonbuilding numbers were $638 million compared to $890 million in 2003.

Nonbuilding construction includes streets and highways, bridges, dams and reservoirs, river and harbor developments, sewage and water supply systems, missile and space facilities, airports, utilities and communication systems.

Nonresidential buildings include commercial, manufacturing, educational, religious, administrative, recreational, hotel, dormitory and other building.

The plant will mix petroleum coke and oxygen, then heat the mixture to produce power, steam and hydrogen.

Shawn Trahan, public affairs officer at Citgo, said the project's current screening phase would be followed by an environmental phase. Leucadia National is the project's primary investor.
